Brussels
, 10 February 2010 - This year's European Perioperative Nurses Day is being celebrated on 15 February under the theme "Patients Need Quality Care". The European Operating Room Nurses Association (EORNA) launched the Day to draw attention to the critical role that perioperative nurses play in providing care to patients before, during and after surgery. On the occasion of the European Day of Perioperative Nurses, and in support of EORNA's objectives, Ansell Healthcare, --through its AnsellCares® educational programme--supports is making available two new courses on hand hygiene and latex allergies in surgical environments

International recognition

The European Perioperative Nurses Day constitutes an opportunity to put perioperative nursing in the spotlight. Perioperative nurses - often referred to as Operating Room (OR) nurses - work in hospital surgical departments, day-surgery units and clinics. Their main role includes all caring and nursing activities performed in the preoperative (before), intraoperative (during) and postoperative (after) phases of surgery. Perioperative nurses work closely with the patient and healthcare professionals to help plan, implement and evaluate the surgical treatment. Their role in crucial in ensuring positive outcomes in surgery.

The European Perioperative Nurses Day is an initiative of the European Operating Room Nurses Association (EORNA). "With this initiative we want to get more recognition for our profession, and promote Patient Safety through quality care. We also want to draw attention to our continued education programme," says Caroline Higgins, President EORNA.

Quality care through continued education

Fundamental nursing skills are the foundation for perioperative nurses. However, their education continues beyond basic nursing programmess.. OR nurses can receive accreditation for courses which help keep them up-to-date with the latest techniques and methods.

To support nurses in providing Quality Care through continued education, EORNA's Accreditation Council for Education (ACE) proposes a series of courses accessible via a web-based portal. The AnsellCares® self-study courses were the first to be accepted by EORNA. Focusing on infection control, allergy prevention, barrier protection and nursing procedures, the AnsellCares® courses perfectly link into the requirements of continued education for healthcare workers. On the occasion of European Day of Perioperative Nurses, AnsellCares® launches two new courses on hand hygiene and latex allergies. The two new courses have been developed by Ansell in collaboration with professional nurses and are offered free-of-charge via the EORNA platform to European perioperative nursing staff.
